Second seed Karolina Pliskova eased past American Madison Brengle 6-2 6-3 to book her passage to the second round. Brengle was no match for the Czech, who had 36 winners and won seven of eight break points to stamp her authority on the American.

1510 CECCHINATO KNOCKED OUT IN FIVE SETS Last year's semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato of Italy was knocked out 2-6 6-7(6) 6-4 6-2 6-4 by French wildcard Nicolas Mahut.

In a match that lasted three hours and 18 minutes, Mahut had 56 winners and won 47 points at the net to beat the 16th seed who is ranked more than 230 places above him. 1440 NISHIKORI PROGRESSES IN STRAIGHT SETS

Japan's Kei Nishikori was untroubled in his encounter against French wildcard Quentin Halys, winning 6-2 6-3 6-4. Halys' 39 unforced errors and 10 double faults against the seventh seed led to his downfall.

1430 FEDERER ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND Third seed Roger Federer was in control throughout his contest with Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, winning 6-2 6-4 6-4 on his return to Roland Garros.

The 37-year-old Swiss was never really troubled by the Italian, who playing in the main draw for the first time. 1335 KUZNETSOVA OUSTED BY QUALIFIER KUCOVA

Slovak qualifier Kristina Kucova reached the second round of the French Open for the first time with a 6-4 6-2 win over former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. Although Kuznetsova hit 24 winners to Kucova's 18, the Russian made 25 unforced errors to bow out in the opening round.

1325 DIMITROV GOES THE DISTANCE AGAINST TIPSAREVIC Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov needed over three hours to beat Serbian veteran Janko Tipsarevic 6-3 6-0 3-6 6-7(4) 6-4.

Dimitrov hit 70 winners and 12 aces in a match where both players came up to the net numerous times, with the Bulgarian winning 28 net points to Tipsarevic's 25. 1320 AUGER-ALIASSIME WITHDRAWS WITH INJURY

Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime has withdrawn from the tournament due to a groin injury, organisers said. The 18-year-old suffered the injury in the Lyon final on Saturday where he lost to Frenchman Benoit Paire. Lucky loser Alejandro Davidovich Fokina takes his place in the draw.

1228 TSITSIPAS CRUISES PAST MARTERER Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Maximilian Marterer 6-2 6-2 7-6(4) in a clinical performance.

The 20-year-old sixth seed broke Marterer four times and had 36 winners, with 29 unforced errors. 1200 WILDCARD POPYRIN OUTLASTS HUMBERT

Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin overcame the challenge of Frenchman Ugo Humbert 3-6 6-3 7-6(10) 6-3 in a match that lasted nearly three hours. 1125 CILIC EASES INTO SECOND ROUND

Croatia's Marin Cilic enjoyed a relatively comfortable 6-3 7-5 6-1 win over Italy's Thomas Fabbiano. The 11th seed fired 13 aces and 32 winners to beat his opponent, winning a whopping 86% of his points on his first serve.

1110 MUGURUZA TAKEN TO THREE SETS Former champion Garbine Muguruza was stretched to three sets in her opening round match against American Taylor Townsend, eventually winning 5-7 6-2 6-2.

Muguruza won five break points in the encounter. 1050 QUERREY WITHDRAWS WITH INJURY

American Sam Querrey has pulled out of the tournament with an abdominal injury. He has not played a game since his semi-final exit in Houston last month. Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen will take his place in the draw.

1022 KERBER UPSET IN STRAIGHT SETS Fifth seed Angelique Kerber was knocked out in the opening round 6-4 6-2 by Russia's Anastasia Potapova, who is in the main draw for the first time.
