Brewers place RHP Chacin (back strain) on IL

The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Jhoulys Chacin on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a strained lower back. It marked the second straight day that Milwaukee placed a starting pitcher on the IL. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (arm fatigue) joined the list Saturday.

Chacin said his back stiffened up Saturday, one day after he was shelled for seven runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings while losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It really stinks when you go on the (IL), but sometimes bad things happen and you can't really do anything about it," Chacin told reporters Sunday. "It's not the right time for me because I really want to go out, pitch and try to get better. Sometimes things happen for a reason."

Chacin is 3-7 with a 5.74 ERA in 12 starts. He has lost each of his past four outings. The Brewers also recalled right-handed relievers Jacob Barnes and Taylor Williams from Triple-A San Antonio and optioned catcher Jacob Nottingham to the same affiliate.

Down two starters, the Brewers plan to recall right-hander Jimmy Nelson from San Antonio to start Wednesday's game. Nelson would be making his first big league appearance since seriously injuring his pitching shoulder while diving head-first into first base as a baserunner in September 2017. Nelson was 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts prior to the injury in 2017. He missed all of 2018 after surgery and has a 33-44 record and 4.12 ERA in 109 career appearances (104 starts).

Nelson, who also turns 30 on Wednesday, is 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA in five appearances (four starts) at San Antonio. "He's certainly put in the work, and credit to him for that," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of Nelson. "He aced that part of it. It's more than he would have liked, but that's the way it worked, and that's the way he healed."

Barnes, 29, was 1-1 with a 6.89 ERA in 16 appearances (one start) for the Brewers earlier this season, the 27-year-old Williams is 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in six appearances for Milwaukee, and the 24-year-old Nottingham is 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs in six games for the Brewers. --Field Level Media
