On February 27, a Mi-17 V-5 fighter of the Srinagar-based Unit of Indian Air Force crashed during a dogfight with Pakistan's US made F -16 fleet. Immediately after shooting down an F-16, Varthaman's fighter also got crashed. He had to land around 100 km inside the Pakistani and was captured by the Pakistani security forces.
After he was captured, Varthaman showed courage and grace in handling the most difficult circumstances for which he was widely praised by politicians, strategic affairs experts, ex-servicemen, celebrities and people in general.
