Former U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic was made to work hard by Frenchman Adrian Mannarino before sealing a 7-6(6) 7-6(4) 6-3 victory to set up a clash with Joao Sousa.

Earlier, 12th seed Fabio Fognini won a marathon against unseeded American Frances Tiafoe 5-7 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 in three hours and 23 minutes.

1906 ISNER WINS IN STRAIGHT SETS

American ninth seed John Isner, who reached the semi-finals last year, fired 29 aces and struck 56 winners en route to a 6-3 6-4 7-6(9) win over Norwegian Casper Ruud.

1746 NADAL BLASTS PAST SUGITA

Spain's Rafa Nadal, bidding to claim the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year for a third time, beat qualifier Yuichi Sugita 6-3 6-1 6-3. He meets Nick Kyrgios next.

1723 WILLIAMS GETS PAST DEBUTANT GATTO-MONTICONE

Serena Williams staved off a late comeback attempt by Italian Giulia Gatto-Monticone, making her Wimbledon debut at the age of 31 after 17 years on the women's tour, to prevail 6-2 7-5 and remain unbeaten in first-round matches at the All England Club.

1659 SHARAPOVA RETIRES WITH INJURY, KVITOVA THROUGH

Former champion Maria Sharapova went out in the first round after she was forced to quit her match against France's Pauline Parmentier due to an injury. The Russian trailed 4-6 7-6(4) 5-0 before she conceded the contest. Twice winner Petra Kvitova, playing with her left arm taped up at the elbow, dispatched Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4 6-2. The Czech sixth seed faces Kristina Mladenovic next.

1541 FEDERER SHAKES OFF SLOW START TO BEAT HARRIS

Roger Federer began his bid for a ninth Wimbledon title with a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory over tournament debutant Lloyd Harris of South Africa. It was Federer's 96th victory at Wimbledon as he reached the second round for a 17th consecutive year.

His Swiss compatriot Belinda Bencic earlier sealed a 6-2 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to set up a clash with Kaia Kanepi. The Estonian beat Stefanie Voegele 5-7 7-5 6-4.

1538 TSONGA MAKES SHORT WORK OF TOMIC

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the shortest men's singles match at Wimbledon since 2004, breezing past Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-2 6-1 6-4 in 58 minutes.

1529 MUGURUZA STUNNED IN FIRST ROUND

Spain's Garbine Muguruza, the 2017 champion, lost 6-4 6-4 to Beatriz Haddad Maia. Brazilian Haddad Maia fired seven aces and 20 winners en route to victory.

1516 KONTA FENDS OFF BOGDAN

Britain's Johanna Konta produced a solid performance to defeat Ana Bogdan 7-5 6-2 and set up a second-round encounter with Katerina Siniakova. "It'll be a tough match. She beat Naomi (Osaka) in Paris, is a feisty competitor and hits big," 19th seed Konta told the BBC.

"I feel I am building through the season and reading the game and expressing myself better on court. I was not playing the best tennis but I competed as best I could."

1421 QUERREY DUMPS OUT THIEM

Fifth seed Dominic Thiem, runner-up at the French Open, crashed out in the first round at the All England Club after having to retire at the same stage last year, losing 6-7(4) 7-6(1) 6-3 6-0 to American Sam Querrey. Former world number eight Marcos Baghdatis, who is set to retire after the tournament, joined Querrey in the next round after beating Canada's Brayden Schnur 6-2 6-4 6-4.

1344 KYRGIOS DEFEATS FELLOW AUSTRALIAN THOMPSON

Nick Kyrgios, the 2014 quarter-finalist, defeated Australian compatriot Jordan Thompson 7-6(4) 3-6 7-6(10) 0-6 6-1.

In another marathon clash, Britain's James Ward surrendered a two-set lead against Nikoloz Basilashvili before going down 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-4 8-6 to the 18th seed from Georgia.

1332 BARTY AND KERBER SAIL THROUGH

French Open champion Ash Barty wasted little time getting into top gear as she powered past China's Zheng Saisai 6-4 6-2. Defending champion Angelique Kerber also proved too strong for German compatriot Tatjana Maria, winning 6-4 6-3.

1238 LOCAL FAVOURITES EVANS AND DART ADVANCE

Home hope Dan Evans overcame Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 while fellow Briton Harriet Dart rallied to knock out unseeded American Christina McHale 4-6 6-4 6-4.

1223 NISHIKORI STARTS STRONGLY

Japan's Kei Nishikori, seeded eighth, overcame Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro 6-4 7-6(3) 6-4. Earlier, Australia's Alex De Minaur swatted aside Italy's Marco Cecchinato 6-0 6-4 7-6(5) while Steve Johnson beat Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4 6-2 6-3.

1124 STEPHENS SAFELY CLEARS FIRST HURDLE

American ninth seed Sloane Stephens, who had crashed out in the opening round in the previous two years, breezed past Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 6-4 in her tournament opener.

Also advancing to the second round were Belgium's Elise Mertens, who beat Fiona Ferro 6-2 6-0, and China's Wang Qiang who eased past Vera Lapko 6-2 6-2. Lesia Tsurenko, the 32nd seed, fell 6-3 6-2 to Barbora Strycova.
