An eagle with an eight-iron from 180 yards at the par-four 16th was just one highlight of an eventful day for Thomas, who broke by two strokes the previous best score at Medinah, set just 24 hours previously by Hideki Matsuyama.

Yankees fete Rivera: 'I'm glad I did OK'

The New York Yankees celebrated the Hall of Fame induction of Mariano Rivera on Saturday, welcoming the legendary closer back to the mound. Rivera threw out the first pitch to his oldest son, Mariano Jr., before the Yankees faced the Cleveland Indians. Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox is leaving Team USA to focus on the upcoming season, Yahoo Sports reported Saturday. USA Basketball confirmed Fox's decision in a release issued Saturday, shortly before the team was set to board a plane for Australia.

Kuznetsova stuns Barty to set up finals clash with Keys

Ash Barty lost her chance to regain the number one world ranking after she was unexpectedly beaten in straight sets by Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday. Top seed Barty, who would have replaced the injured Naomi Osaka as the world number one with a victory, struggled with the rhythm off her serve as she lost 6-2 6-4, losing eight consecutive games to the Russian at one point.

Goffin tops Gasquet to make Cincinnati final

A rested David Goffin advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 final with a straight set victory over Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday. The 16th seeded Belgian prevailed 6-3 6-4 to make his 13th ATP Tour final.

Tiger keeps Tour Championship hopes alive with 67 at BMW

Tiger Woods kept his hopes of qualifying for next week's Tour Championship alive by shooting a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday during the third round of the BMW Championship in Medinah, Ill. Woods finished the day at 7-under 209 through 54 holes at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, tied for 31st after finishing Friday tied for 48th. NFL notebook: Chargers S James to have foot surgery

Los Angeles Chargers All-Pro safety Derwin James will have surgery on his right foot and be sidelined approximately three months, NFL Network reported Saturday. James suffered a stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal during practice Thursday and was in a walking boot Friday. The three-month timetable leaves open the possibility of James returning from injured reserve for the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

History repeats itself as McIlroy gets another police escort

Seven years after Rory McIlroy was given a police escort to make his tee time for the Ryder Cup, history repeated itself when the Northern Irishman received the same treatment for the third round of the BMW Championship in suburban Chicago. In 2012 it was an urgent matter after European team member McIlroy got his starting time confused for the final day's play at Medinah before a police officer came to the rescue by escorting him swiftly to the course.

MLB notebook: Sale (elbow) may be out for season

The Boston Red Sox placed left-hander Chris Sale on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation on Saturday, and he could be finished for the season. Among the doctors who will examine Sale's medical tests is noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
