Phillies C Realmuto to undergo knee surgery

Philadelphia Phillies All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto will undergo surgery on Friday to repair meniscus damage in his right knee, manager Gabe Kapler told reporters on Wednesday. Realmuto last played on Sunday when he felt a "pop" in the knee while running out a double-play grounder. Kapler didn't feel Realmuto's injury would be a long-term issue.

The 28-year-old Realmuto batted .275 and established career bests of 25 homers and 83 RBIs while playing in 145 games. He smacked 36 doubles, a club record for a catcher, surpassing the mark set by Darren Daulton (35) in 1993. Realmuto was named to the National League All-Star team for the second straight season.

He was acquired from the Miami Marlins last offseason.
