Vettel's rear tyre became a flailing carcass while Leclerc, who had climbed from 14th on the grid after an engine change, was hobbled by a smashed front suspension. The Dutchman then pitted when Bottas pulled over and triggered the safety car on lap 53, with Hamilton -- instructed to do the opposite -- staying out to become a sitting target for Verstappen on fresher rubber. The Briton was powerless to prevent Verstappen going past at the re-start but the second safety car triggered by Ferrari offered Hamilton a chance to take on new tyres.

He came back out for a final rush for the podium, with two laps of racing remaining after the safety car left the track, and went past Gasly for third before trying to pass Albon and colliding. Finland's 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen was fourth for Alfa Romeo with Italian team mate Antonio Giovinazzi fifth and Australian Daniel Ricciardo sixth for Renault.

McLaren's Lando Norris took eighth place ahead of Racing Point's Sergio Perez with Gasly's Russian team mate Daniil Kvyat completing the top 10.
