YouTube integrated a new functionality to its platform: 'Digital Wellbeing' will allow users of the mobile application to better control the time they spend watching videos.

The announcement was shared by Brian Marquardt, Director of Product Management for YouTube, on the official blog, and highlighted four features of the latest update of the application and noted:

Our goal is to provide a better understanding of the time that is spent on YouTube, so you can make informed decisions about how you want YouTube to better fit your life, he said.

  • It will allow knowing the time spent watching videos through the profile of each user, providing statistics of the hours used during the day, the day before, the last seven days and a daily average.
  • It will be possible to configure reminders that will appear on the screen of the device indicating, in a friendly way, that the time limit to watch videos was reached and it is time to take a break.
  • For those who wish to have better control over when to receive notifications from YouTube, the tool will allow you to group them in only one during the day and set a specific time to receive a summary.
  • You can also disable the sounds and vibrations of notifications during sleep time (between 10 pm and 8 am), or customize the start and end time.

These new features are intended to allow users to focus on what matters most and disconnect when necessary, and thus provide them with a sense of digital well - being.

The tools of Digital Wellbeing were presented last May during the Google I/O in order to help users to monitor the way they use devices, applications, and other technological tools, and look for a balance with daily life, doing a kind of digital detoxification by introducing new controls.
