You can now set expirations on files in shared drives via Google Drive API

Google is adding the option to set expirations on files in shared drives using the Google Drive API. This expansion builds upon the successful introduction of the feature in October 2022, which allowed users to set expiring access when sharing files in My Drive, making it easier for users to control access appropriately.

With the latest update, developers can fully control file expirations through the Google Drive API, including the ability to create, read, update, and delete expiring access settings. Meanwhile, end users will have the option to view the expiration details within the sharing dialog but will not be able to modify them.

This feature will be ON by default and cannot be disabled by end users.

"If an expiring access has been set by a developer in your domain, you will automatically see it in the sharing dialog," Google wrote in a blog post.

The feature is available to Google Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus customers. It will not be available to Essentials Starter, Business Starter, Frontline Starter, Frontline Standard, and Nonprofits as well as users with personal Google Accounts.
