Hong Kong's Cheung Ka-long clinched a 15-14 victory in the men's foil bout against Italy’s Filippo Macchi in a controversial match that led to a torrent of online insults. The Italian team has filed a formal complaint challenging the result.
In response to the contentious outcome, Italian netizens swarmed Cheung's Instagram, claiming their team was 'robbed' and condemning the result as 'stolen'. Hong Kong users fired back with posts mocking Italian cuisine, such as 'loving pineapple pizza' and 'pasta with soy sauce', with many sharing pictures of themselves eating pizza in solidarity with Cheung.
A viral Hong Kong Pizza Hut ad showcased a pineapple-topped pizza alongside a fencer skewering a pineapple, offering free pineapple toppings in the restaurant. Macchi’s coach, Stefano Cerioni, described Macchi as the 'moral winner', and Giovanni Malago, president of Italy's national Olympic Committee, announced a formal protest focusing on the final point, which took three replays before Cheung secured the victory.
Complaints also arose regarding the referees' origins from South Korea and Chinese Taipei, which Italians argued were geographically close to Hong Kong. An IOC spokesperson stated that the Italian appeal falls under the purview of the respective federation.
Despite the uproar, Macchi expressed his disappointment on Instagram, with followers voicing support and criticism. He urged respect for referee decisions and refused to blame them for his loss. Many Hong Kong users posted 'respect' under his comments, thanking him for his measured response.
