Currency Turmoil: Yen and Aussie Dollar React to Rate Decisions
The yen fluctuated on Wednesday after the Bank of Japan raised interest rates and outlined a plan to taper its bond-buying program. While initially rallying, the yen's gains were short-lived. Similarly, the Australian dollar plummeted following lower-than-expected core inflation data, raising doubts about future rate hikes.
The yen experienced significant volatility on Wednesday following the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) announcement of an interest rate hike and a comprehensive plan to reduce its bond-buying program. Initially, the yen surged to a three-month high of 151.58 per dollar but quickly reversed those gains.
In the wake of the BOJ's 7-2 vote to raise the overnight call rate target to 0.25%, market expectations of a hawkish move were somewhat tempered by a less aggressive quantitative tightening plan. The BOJ aims to cut its monthly bond purchases to 3 trillion yen by early 2026.
Meanwhile, the Australian dollar fell to its lowest level since May, reacting to disappointing core inflation data that diminished hopes of another rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). As investors grapple with monetary policy shifts globally, the U.S. Federal Reserve's forthcoming rate decision could be the next key market trigger.
