Google Expands AI-Generated Search Summaries to Six New Countries
Google's parent company, Alphabet, is expanding its AI-generated search summaries to six new countries. This comes after improvements to the feature, following corrections to inaccuracies and restrictions on user-generated content. The updates aim to benefit Google, consumers, and publishers by enhancing search query results.
Google parent Alphabet announced Thursday that it is expanding its AI-generated summarization feature for search queries to six new countries, two months after scaling back some functionalities post a troubled launch.
The AI Overviews, initially rolled out in the U.S. in May, aim to offer concise summaries atop search results but faced backlash due to inaccuracies. Recent updates have added restrictions on queries and omitted user-generated content as primary sources. Google claims these changes have improved the quality and user satisfaction.
The newly expanded feature will now be available in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and Britain, with local language support. Enhanced hyperlinking will direct users to original sources, as Google navigates concerns from the media industry about potential traffic loss to publishers' websites.
