In the rapidly evolving world of technology, generative artificial intelligence (AI) is now mainstream, profoundly altering our daily lives. This innovation generates text, images, and other content based on prompts, thereby transforming information consumption and media creation.

A recent survey of over 4,400 Australians reveals a wide range of experiences and attitudes towards generative AI. Approximately 39% have used text-based AI like ChatGPT, while far fewer have engaged with image-focused AI such as Midjourney. Younger adults and individuals with higher education and income levels are the most frequent users.

Despite its growing influence, 74% of Australians believe regulations are needed to manage AI-related risks. The findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced media literacy to equip citizens with skills to navigate and critically analyze AI-driven content. Public funding for media literacy programs is critical to ensuring equitable digital participation.
