Elon Musk's tech enterprises are building significant alliances with the U.S. Department of Defense, reflecting a trend of private sector involvement in military operations. SpaceX, led by CEO Gwynne Shotwell, has secured approximately $22 billion in government contracts, with the lion's share coming from NASA, while the Pentagon accounts for a substantial portion as well.

Among SpaceX’s Pentagon contracts is the notable $733 million National Security Space Launch agreement from October to deliver satellites into orbit. Further collaborations could potentially yield additional hundreds of millions in contracts. Meanwhile, the Starlink service, also under SpaceX, offers crucial satellite-based internet services for challenging environments.

In 2023, a $23 million Pentagon contract was awarded to SpaceX to use Starlink in supporting military operations in Ukraine. While shrouded in confidentiality, the Starshield division—specifically tailored for national security—is reportedly engaged with intelligence agencies on billion-dollar deals.
