India Soars: BEL and Safran Team Up for Smart Weapon Production

Bharat Electronics Limited and Safran Electronics & Defense have formed a joint venture to produce HAMMER, a precision-guided weapon, in India. This collaboration enhances India's defense capabilities, supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing import dependence, and positions India as a global hub for smart munitions production.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Safran Electronics & Defense of France have inked a deal to jointly manufacture and maintain the HAMMER weapon system in India. This initiative is set to bolster India's defense prowess and advance the Atmanirbhar Bharat drive aimed at minimizing import reliance.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by key executives from both companies during Aero India, establishes a basis for the local production of HAMMER. The collaboration will lead to technological transfer and the setup of a Center of Excellence, enhancing engineering and associated services for the Indian armed forces.

Featuring phased production with BEL at the helm, this venture enhances India's capability in producing smart munitions, thereby supporting the Make in India program while also strengthening Safran's industrial footing in the region. Such efforts not only boost local industry, particularly SMEs, but also aid in achieving national defense self-sufficiency.
