Naming Dispute Over the Gulf: Mexico vs. Google
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged Google to reconsider renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' for U.S. users on Google Maps. She stated this action followed a decision by former U.S. President Donald Trump and threatened potential legal action if Google maintains its stance.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday called on Google to review its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' for U.S. Google Maps users. She highlighted the potential for a civil lawsuit against the tech giant if it refuses to amend the name.
The decision follows an effort by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to change the Gulf's name, despite Sheinbaum's argument that 'Gulf of Mexico' is an internationally recognized term. She noted that Mexico's earlier complaints remain unresolved.
Sheinbaum insisted that the renaming should only apply where the U.S. has jurisdiction. She stated that Google Maps users in Mexico currently see the traditional name, while those outside the two nations see both names displayed. Mexico is prepared to take legal action if necessary, she warned.
