Japan's retail giant Seven & i Holdings, the operator of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, has chosen Bain Capital as its preferred buyer for a substantial stake in its non-core business unit, York Holdings, local media reported on Saturday.
Bain Capital's offer, exceeding 700 billion yen (around $4.7 billion), outbid competitors KKR and Japan Industrial Partners in the ongoing bidding process that began last year. The offer was reported by both the Nikkei newspaper and Jiji news agency, though sources were not named.
The planned spinoff, York Holdings, will encompass 31 subsidiaries like superstores, the Akachan Honpo baby goods store, and the company managing Denny's restaurants in Japan. Seven & i's decision reflects their strategy to separate non-core assets for more streamlined operations. ($1 = 149.2900 yen)
