India's Telecom Expansion: Jio Leads Subscriber Growth

India's telephone subscription base rose to 1,189.92 million in December 2024, with Jio leading the growth in both mobile and fixed-line segments. Urban subscriptions increased, while rural ones saw a slight decline. Jio remains the top service provider, significantly expanding its subscriber base in both wireless and wireline categories.

India's telecom landscape witnessed a modest expansion in December 2024, as the total telephone subscriber base grew to 1,189.92 million, according to a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). Reliance Jio emerged as the primary driver of this growth, adding the highest number of subscribers, both in mobile and fixed-line segments.

Urban areas saw an increase in telephone subscriptions, moving from 659.87 million in November to 663.37 million in December. However, rural subscriptions experienced a slight decline, dropping from 527.27 million to 526.56 million during the same period.

The wireless subscriber base expanded marginally from 1,148.65 million to 1,150.66 million, marking a 0.17 percent growth. Reliance Jio led this surge by adding over 3.9 million subscribers, cementing its leading position in the market. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea and state-run companies like BSNL and MTNL faced subscriber losses, further highlighting the competitive landscape in India's telecom sector.
