Tesla's Strategic Shift: Avoiding License Suspension by Dropping 'Autopilot' in California
Tesla has avoided a 30-day suspension of its dealer and manufacturer licenses in California by ceasing to use the term 'autopilot' in its marketing. This decision followed accusations of misleading consumers. The company is now focusing on developing robotaxis and humanoid robots.
Tesla has successfully evaded a 30-day suspension of its dealer and manufacturer licenses in California after agreeing to discontinue the use of the term 'autopilot' in its marketing strategies, a state regulator announced on Tuesday. This decision by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) comes amidst a significant drop in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) due to the expiration of essential tax credits that had previously spurred sales.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has redirected the company's efforts towards the development of robotaxis with self-driving technologies and humanoid robots. In 2022, the Department accused Tesla of misleading customers by employing the titles 'autopilot' and 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) for its advanced driver-support features. Following revisions, Tesla has clarified that supervision by a driver remains necessary under the 'Full Self-Driving' term.
Previously, the DMV had focused its allegations on the term 'autopilot' but deferred a potential sales suspension order in California, Tesla's largest U.S. market. This delay provided Tesla with an opportunity to adequately address the issues raised. The 'autopilot' system allows Tesla vehicles to accelerate, brake, and remain in their lanes on highways, while 'Full Self-Driving' affords the capability to change lanes and respond to urban traffic signals.
