Sweden Confronts Rising Threats Amidst Geopolitical Unrest
Sweden's Security Service warns of heightened threats from the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, affecting Jewish targets domestically. The agency notes increasing risks from criminal gangs exploited by state actors, with Russia posing a significant threat through various sabotage incidents. The security outlook forecasted to deteriorate.
Sweden's Security Service (SAPO) has raised alarm over escalating threats facing the country, specifically from the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has heightened risks to Jewish targets in Sweden. This revelation was part of SAPO's annual national security assessment presented on Wednesday.
According to SAPO operative chief Fredrik Hallstrom, the Iranian government, under pressure, poses substantial danger. This threat is compounded by criminal networks within Sweden, which are reportedly being manipulated by foreign state actors to conduct attacks. A particular focus was placed on Iranian countermeasures escalating threats against American, Israeli, and Jewish entities.
The assessment also highlighted concerns regarding Russia's aggression, notably its alleged involvement in sabotage acts targeting critical infrastructure across Europe. Despite extensive investigations into instances of suspected sabotage on Swedish soil, SAPO has not confirmed direct linkage to any foreign government. Nevertheless, the agency anticipates a deteriorating security environment in the coming years, with Russia as a key instigator.
