Roblox Enforces Age Verification in Indonesia to Meet Social Media Curbs
Roblox is implementing age verification and other measures for players under 16 in Indonesia. Facial scanning is required, and the chat feature will be disabled without it. Roblox Kids and Roblox Select will cater to different age groups, and Indonesia accounts for a significant user base under 16.
Videogame platform Roblox is rolling out new measures in Indonesia to adhere to social media regulations aimed at protecting users under 16, as revealed by the country's communications minister on Thursday.
Key elements of the initiative include mandatory age verification through facial scanning for all under-16 users in Indonesia, according to Minister Meutya Hafid. Without verification, the chat feature will be disabled. Additionally, the platform is introducing a screen time feature designed for parental oversight.
Roblox's VP and Global Head of Public Policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, highlighted these steps as among the strictest globally and announced the forthcoming launch of Roblox Kids, a version for ages 5-12 that excludes chat features, and Roblox Select for ages 13-15 with restricted chat. The measures will affect 23 million under-16 accounts in Indonesia, a significant portion of the country's 45 million Roblox users.
