NITES Calls for Mandatory Work from Home Amidst Global Crisis

NITES, an IT sector union, urged the Indian government to mandate work from home to counter West Asia war impacts. This move aims to conserve fuel, protect the environment, and support employee well-being through remote work, aligning with national priorities and past pandemic practices.

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has made an appeal to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, requesting an advisory for mandatory work from home (WFH) in IT and ITeS sectors, following recent calls by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for safeguarding against the West Asia war impact.

In its formal representation, NITES emphasized that reducing commutes for IT professionals would significantly aid national priorities like fuel conservation and environmental protection. NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja highlighted the sector's successful implementation of WFH during the COVID-19 pandemic as a precedent.

Despite these calls, Nasscom stated that Indian tech companies are already adopting hybrid work models, adjusting WFH and office work based on roles and customer needs. Meanwhile, PM Modi urged citizens to employ various measures to endure challenges, including economic ones, amid the global crisis.
