SpaceX and Anthropic: Navigating the AI Data Lease Agreement
Elon Musk announced that SpaceX has entered a six-month leasing agreement with Anthropic for its AI training data center clusters, with potential for extension. The arrangement is flexible, allowing termination with a 90-day notice. SpaceX's AI segment reported a $2.5 billion loss in the March quarter.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, disclosed on Thursday that the company has entered a six-month lease agreement with Anthropic for its Colossus AI training data center clusters. The lease, although initially for six months, could potentially extend for several years.
In a post on X, Musk stated, "SpaceX has not committed to leasing Colossus for years, although it's possible that may be what happens." This partnership sees Anthropic paying $1.25 billion monthly to use SpaceX's compute capacity through to May 2029, as per deals inked earlier this year.
Despite the IPO-bound company's flexibility, which allows either party to terminate the agreement with a 90-day notice, the six-month lease length was not mentioned in regulatory filings. SpaceX and Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours. Interestingly, SpaceX's AI segment registered a $2.5 billion loss in the March quarter against $818 million revenue.
