Microsoft has called its recent purchased 315 megawatts of solar energy projects as the US largest corporate solar agreement.
The purchase would take place from two Virginia-based solar projects. 750,000 solar panels would be generating solar power across 2,000 acres as part of the Pleinmont I AND II projects. These projects would be operated Utah-based renewable energy company sPower. The electricity generated by these projects would be approximately 715,000Mwh a year.
Microsoft aims to reach its target of reaching 60 percent renewable energy by early 2020. This purchase of 315 MW of solar projects brings then closer to their target.
Microsoft said that they have "enough power to send Marty McFly back in time in a DeLorean" as the purchased renewable energy by them reaches roughly 1.2 gigawatts.
"This project means more than just gigawatts because our commitment is broader than transforming our own operations; it's also about helping other access more renewable energy," President of Microsoft Brad Smith said.
This deal means that Microsoft would power half of its data centers by 2018 with clean energy and would meet the company's target.
Microsoft has also announced a 60 megawatt-peak solar portfolio agreement signed with Singapore solar energy operator Sunseap Group for datacentre use.
In the last year, the company also announced two wind deals in Ireland and the Netherlands. Also in late 2016, the company signed a deal for 237 megawatts.
