An on-court scuffle between Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart and Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith has led to $40,000 in fines.

The incident, for which Smart was assessed a technical foul and ejected, occurred with 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter of the Cavaliers' 113-102 win over the Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday night.

In a rematch of last season's Eastern Conference finals, Smith and Boston's Aron Baynes locked elbows under the basket, and Smith was assessed a technical foul for shoving Baynes. On Monday, the NBA fined Smith $15,000.

The league ruled Smart escalated the situation by rushing toward Smith and pushing him. A referee kept Smith away from Smart, while Smart's teammates, Jayson Tatum and Terry Rozier, pulled him away.

Smart was ejected from the game. He received a $25,000 fine.
