Jennie Kidd was born in Wooden Mills, Scotland and moved with her parents to Canada in 1847, settling near Stratford, Ontario. Jennie Kidd Trout was the only woman in Canada licensed to practise medicine until 1880 when Stowe Emily completed the official qualifications.
Google Doodle is celebrating her 177th birthday today. She was suffering from a chronic disease and her own suffering inspired her to pursue the career in medicine. She studied medicine at the University of Toronto. Both Emily and Jennie were among the first women who were admitted to the Toronto School of Medicine.
Trout after some time transferred herself to Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and earned her M.D on March 11, 1875, and finally became the first woman to have a license as a physician in Canada.

She opened the Therapeutic and Electrical Institute in Toronto which specialized in treatments for females and involved galvanic baths. She also ran a free health centre for the poor at the same location. She gained quite a lot success and her institute became famous in no time. Later on more branches were opened in Brantford and Hamilton, Ontario.
Canada paid her due respect when in 1991, Canada post issued a postage stamp in her honour to commemorate her as the first woman licensed to practise medicine in Canada.
