In eight states selected by the government, municipalities and associations will be demonstrating against the storage of spent nuclear fuel on their territory. They want the state to be involved in the preparation of a law that will give municipalities an equal position in deciding how to handle the fuel. They also ask for Radioactive Waste Repository Management (RAWRA) to withdraw new applications for exploration sites that they want to have for all nine locations.
The platform brings together 25 towns and villages and 12 clubs. They organize marches, cycling, cross-country skiing, talks, shows and concerts during the day. The inhabitants of the newly added locality Na Skalní u Dukovan will be involved for the first time, but Temelín will not be protesting.
Among the potential sites for the repository is Čertovka on the border between the Ústí nad Labem Region and the Pilsen Region, the Březový brook in the Pilsen region, the Magdaléna in the Tábor region, the Čidhal on Jindřichův Hradec, Hrádek in Jihlavsko, the Horka in Třebíč region and Kraví Hora in Žďársko. Geological research began in the vicinity of power plants in Dukovany and Temelin.
Nohava is expecting hundreds of people today in the Rain. The platform was supported on Friday by mayors of Austrian municipalities. They did not protest against the storage, it was about finding the right solution.
The repository, where thousands of tons of spent nuclear fuel should be stored at a depth of half a kilometer, is to be built by 2065. Construction and operation cost about 111 billion crowns. Now the spent fuel from the nuclear blocks is stored in storage facilities in power stations.
