18 museum managers attend workshop on risk management for cultural sites in Sudan

On 10-12 April 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office, in partnership with the Sudanese National Corporation for Museums and Antiquities (MCAM) in the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities (MoCTA) and National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom) organized workshop on General Principles of Risk Management for Cultural Sites and Museums. The workshop attended by 18 museum managers from all sides of the country, including 5 women and 5 professionals from outside of the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis. The activity was partially funded by the Heritage Emergency Fund in frameworks of the project “Development of Emergency Preparedness and Response Plans for the Sudanese National Museum and Two Cultural World Heritage Properties”. The event was honored by H.E. Dr. Somia Idris Okoued, the State Minister in MoCTA, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the Representative of UNESCO to Sudan, and Dr. Abdelrahman Ali, the General Director of NCAM, and led by Prof. Maamoun Abdelkarim, former Director of the Antiquities in Syria, and Prof. Assaad Seif, former Director of the Antiquities in Lebanon.

The Sudanese museum workers were trained in risk management, how to identify risks related to the treasuries of the archaeological sites or museums, how to prepare and assess the possible damages and how to respond mitigating various risk origin/hazards. The WS leaders also presented experiences from their countries on how to prepare and prevent the risks faced by archaeological sites and museums.
