A bag lying unattended outside the railway junction here in Uttar Pradesh triggered a scare on Wednesday, prompting police to evacuate the station.
A forensic team was called to examine the bag.
According to the police, the bag, containing a battery, wire and a bank passbook, belonged to a suspended constable whom an officer described as a drug addict.
The suspended constable, Narendra Pratap Singh of Panki in Kanpur district, was interrogated, but he denied keeping a battery and wire in the bag, Superintendent of Police Vipin Kumar Mishra said.
Mishra said Singh is a drug addict and does not remember where he left the bag.
The matter is being investigated, he said.
Singh was suspended for remaining absent from duty for three years, the police officer said, adding that the process for his dismissal will be initiated.
