At least 44 bus passengers were injured in two separate road accidents in this Uttar Pradesh district on Monday, police said.

Masauli Station House Officer (SHO) Abhishek Tiwari said the double-decker bus was hit by a tanker from behind when it was stuck in a traffic jam at the Ahmadpur toll plaza in the Safdarjung police station area and as a result, it rammed into a truck in the front.

Of the 50 passengers on board, 20 suffered serious injuries, while several others sustained minor injuries, he said, adding that all the injured were taken to different hospitals with the help of the police. Arrangements were on to send those with minor injuries home after first aid.

The injured included the bus driver Rakesh Mishra, he said. In the second incident, a double-decker bus from Delhi to Gonda with 70 passengers on board dashed into a divider at the Masauli police station intersection and overturned. On hearing the screams, the locals rushed to the spot and pulled everyone out, police said. About 24 people were injured in the accident and the Masauli police have admitted five residents of Kaudiya Basantpur in Gonda district to the Community Health Center (CHC).

The remaining 19 people were admitted to CHC Badagaon from where they were discharged after first aid. According to passengers, the accident took place because the driver was sleepy, police added.
