The future trajectory of the stock market is intricately tied to the new government's economic policies, according to experts who spoke on Tuesday. Key elements like GDP growth, inflation, and global conditions will be pivotal in determining market direction.
As the BJP-led NDA continues efforts to form a government—with crucial backing from coalition partners—the markets remain jittery. Experts are cautioning investors to brace for volatility due to currently high valuations, advocating for a diversified approach.
Tuesday saw benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty plummet over 8 percent during intra-day trading, ending nearly 6 percent lower. This marked their worst decline in four years, triggered by the emerging trend that BJP may fall short of a clear majority in the Lok Sabha elections. Sensex crashed 4,389.73 points to settle at 72,079.05, and Nifty tanked 1,379.40 points to 21,884.50. However, the markets had surged on Monday following exit polls predicting a landslide victory for the BJP-led NDA.
The hallmark reformistic approach seen in the previous two NDA terms might be sidelined in this uncertain political climate, stated Manish Chaudhary, Head of Research at StoxBox. With BJP likely to secure around 240 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the potential coalition government will necessitate alliances with parties like TDP and JDU.
Yashovardhan Khemka, Senior Manager of Research & Analytics at Abans Holdings, highlighted that reliance on coalition partners for making key policy decisions and cabinet positions could lead to policy paralysis and governmental uncertainty.
Suman Bannerjee, CIO at Hedonova, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the market's future will largely depend on the new government's economic strategies and factors such as GDP growth, inflation, and global conditions.
The political stability since May 2014, coupled with reforms and favorable global economic factors, had sparked a strong rally in the Indian stock market. This period saw a remarkable increase of over Rs 300 lakh crore in investor wealth, demonstrating robust confidence and participation.
Experts noted that investors favor policy continuity, and India's long-term structural growth story remains intact. 'A lot of elements are in place. Over anything, the economics should prevail. We are already leading in factors like GDP, market cap, and demographic dividend,' commented Manish Jain, Director of Institutional Business at Mirae Asset Capital Markets.
