Sealdah Station Modernisation: Train Services To Resume

The ongoing infrastructure upgrade at Sealdah station in Kolkata has been completed, with normal train services expected to resume soon. The modernisation resulted in the temporary suspension of operations on some platforms, causing disruptions for passengers. Normal operations are now set to begin, though some trains might experience slight delays.

Work on the ongoing infrastructure upgrade at Sealdah station in Kolkata is now complete and train services are likely to normalize soon, an official said on Sunday.

The modernisation activities commenced early Friday morning, causing the cancellation or short-termination of several suburban trains over the past three days.

The Eastern Railway spokesperson, Kausik Mitra, mentioned that to facilitate the operation of 12-coach EMU trains on the Sealdah Main section, extensive infrastructural upgrades were implemented, which included modernising the interlocking system. Platforms 1 to 5 were closed from Friday until 2 pm today, as scheduled,” Mitra added. “Despite the anticipated disruptions, the work concluded two hours ahead of schedule, allowing EMU train operations to commence on all platforms starting from noon. Some trains may experience slight delays as services resume,” Mitra stated. Over the weekend, passengers faced hardships with long-distance trains being delayed, although they were not canceled.

Sealdah station saw congestion beginning from Saturday night due to affected passengers. A senior official clarified that out of 21 platforms, only five were suspended for the upgrade work.
