Tragedy struck near Gangnani on the Gangotri National Highway in Uttarakhand as a bus carrying 29 people plummeted into a gorge, claiming the lives of three women and leaving 26 others injured, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to police, the incident occurred around 50 km from Gangnani on Tuesday night. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which broke through a crash barrier and tumbled down the gorge. Fortunately, the bus got caught on a tree, preventing it from falling into the Bhagirathi river below. Rescue operations began immediately.
The injured were promptly taken out through the windows and rushed to Uttarkashi District Hospital and Bhatwadi Health Centre. Twelve were reported to be in serious condition and transferred to a hospital in Rishikesh. This stretch of road has witnessed multiple tragic incidents in recent years, raising concerns about safety measures.
