Pakistan's financial outlook received a potential boost as Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb announced that a loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is likely to be reached next month. Addressing a post-budget press conference, Aurangzeb noted that negotiations with the IMF are progressing positively.

The recently unveiled Rs 18,877 billion budget, which many believe aligns with IMF requirements for a USD 6-8 billion loan under the Extended Fund Facility, proposes a significant increase in taxes aimed at generating additional revenues of Rs 3.8 trillion. This move, including both direct and indirect tax hikes, is seen as an effort to meet IMF's stringent demands.

In July 2023, the IMF approved a USD 3 billion Stand-By Arrangement to support Pakistan's efforts to stabilize its economy. Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of economic digitization to reduce corruption and increase transparency, while also announcing a phased increase in petroleum development levies linked to international oil prices.
