In a momentous achievement, Indian Railways successfully conducted a trial run of an eight-coach MEMU train over the world's highest railway bridge, Chenab Bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, paving the way for the inauguration of rail services between Reasi and Baramulla in Kashmir.
The Railway Ministry disclosed in a statement that senior officers from the Railway Board, Northern Railway, and Konkan Railway carried out an extensive inspection before the trial run. The train navigated a 46-km electrified segment from Sangaldan in Ramban district to Reasi at 40 kmph, crossing nine tunnels with a combined length of 40.787 km, including the longest tunnel of 11.13 km.
This historic event, witnessed by a large gathering chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai,' included employees and officials associated with the project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was credited by attendees for realizing this connectivity dream that started 20 years ago. The inauguration of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project officially began with the launch of the Banihal-Sangaldan section in February 2024, promising enhanced socio-economic integration and regional development.
