Gautam Adani, Chairman and founder of the Adani group of companies, hailed the arrival of the container vessel 'San Fernando' at Vizhinjam International Seaport as a historic event. 'Historic Day as Vizhinjam welcomes its 1st container vessel! Adani posted on X.
The San Fernando, carrying over 1,000 containers, is anchored at the port as part of a trial run ahead of the start of commercial operations. The Vizhinjam International Seaport has been constructed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), with a total investment of Rs 8,867 crore. The Kerala state government has contributed approximately Rs 5,595 crore, while the central government added Rs 818 crore to the public-private partnership project. The port's construction began in 2016 after APSEZ was allotted the project on December 5, 2015.
The arrival of the port's first container vessel was celebrated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who praised the Adani Group for their efforts. 'Adani Group, the builders and operators of the port, deserve appreciation for ensuring the project's completion. Vizhinjam Port exemplifies successful public-private partnership, highlighting collaborative development potential. Join us in celebrating this historic achievement that marks a new era of progress and prosperity for Kerala.' Last year, Karan Adani, CEO of APSEZ, announced that the port would be capable of docking the world's largest container ships and emerge as a global bunkering hub, supplying green fuel like hydrogen and ammonia.
The Vizhinjam International Seaport has created over 5,000 direct jobs and is anticipated to significantly boost Kerala's industry, commerce, transportation, and tourism sectors.
