As Kerala commemorates the historic docking of the first mothership at Vizhinjam International Seaport, political tensions have surfaced. The Congress party criticized the government for allegedly excluding opposition leadership from the ceremony.
The massive cargo ship, 'San Fernando' from China, arrived on Thursday, marking the first container ship to dock at India's premier international deep-water trans-shipment port. Despite the celebration, senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor abstained from the event, citing unmet local demands for compensation and rehabilitation.
The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee pointed out that the project was the brainchild of former Chief Minister Late Oommen Chandy and demanded the port be named in his honor. They accused the current government of neglecting Chandy's contributions and voiced concerns over the untouched promises by the previous UDF government.
