Assam Advances in SDG Rankings, Aims Higher

Assam has made notable progress in the national index for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2023-24, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, he revealed that the state has achieved the 'Front Runner' status, earning a score of 65, compared to the national score of 71.

''The NITI Aayog's report highlights Assam as one of the fastest-growing states,'' Sarma stated. ''Our aim is to surpass the national score within the next two years.''

Assam initially joined the SDG index in 2016, ranked in the 'Aspirant' category with a score of 49, and improved to the 'Performer' category by 2019.

''Previously, Assam was seen as a liability for India, but it is now contributing positively with advancements in poverty alleviation, water supply, green energy, and sustainable urban development,'' the Chief Minister highlighted.

However, Sarma noted that higher education remains a significant challenge, with a low score of 16.5 impacting the state's overall SDG ranking.

''We are rolling out new schemes to improve the gross enrollment ratio and aim for a score of 19 in higher education within two years,'' he said. The report also identified Uttarakhand and Kerala as the top performers, while Bihar ranked the lowest.
