Railway Board Standardizes Training for Loco Pilots in Automatic Signalling Regions

The Railway Board has taken significant steps to standardize the training of loco pilots across its zones when operating in automatic signalling territories. This decision comes in response to recent train accidents where signal failures in automatic signalling areas were identified as contributory factors.

The Board's circular, issued on July 13, directs all zonal railways to follow a unified training protocol that includes one-day intensive counselling and competency tests every six months for loco pilots and their assistants. These measures are expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of railway operations.

Furthermore, the circular outlines a new training regimen for the introduction of new automatic signalling territories, mandating two-day training sessions and periodic intensive counselling. Updates to existing training modules at the Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering & Telecommunication (IRiset) and the Zonal Railway Training Institute (ZRTI) have also been implemented. A retired senior rail safety official praised the move as essential for maintaining safety norms and effective train operations.
