Bengaluru Launches South India's First Double-Decker Rail-Cum-Road Flyover

South India's first double-decker rail-cum-road flyover in Bengaluru was partially opened for a trial run. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar led the event, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion at the Central Silk Board Junction. The 5.12 km flyover will reduce travel time by over 30%.

Bengaluru has partially opened South India's first double-decker rail-cum-road flyover for a trial run, officials announced Wednesday. The flyover, constructed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), aims to alleviate traffic congestion at the Central Silk Board Junction, one of the city's busiest intersections.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar conducted a 'trial walk' on the flyover, which stretches from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board and is part of the Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and other officials were also present at the event.

Built at a cost of Rs 449 crore, the 5.12 km rail-cum-road flyover will initially be open for vehicular movement on one side. Officials claim it will save road travellers more than 30% in travel time. However, certain ramps and loops are still under construction, with completion expected by June 2025. The BMRCL lauds this project as a significant step in Bengaluru's infrastructural innovation.
