The British Pound dipped slightly on Thursday but remained on track for its fourth consecutive weekly gain against the dollar. A recent set of UK economic data has fueled speculation that the Bank of England may have limited room to reduce interest rates at its upcoming August meeting.

Official UK data revealed that average weekly earnings, excluding bonuses, rose by 5.7% in the three months leading to the end of May compared to the previous year. This figure met median forecasts, suggesting that inflationary pressures remain a concern for the BoE. Sterling was 0.1% lower at $1.2995 after hitting a session peak of $1.30125 preceding the wage growth report.

Hetal Mehta, head of economic research at St. James's Place, noted that the slight dip in wage growth could be a positive sign for the BoE, especially following disappointing services inflation data. With crucial data still pending before the August Monetary Policy Report, the decision to alter rates hangs in balance. Wednesday's consumer price report indicated stability in service-sector inflation at 5.7%, while the headline inflation remained steady at 2%.

Further supporting economic optimism, a report on July 11 highlighted a 0.4% rise in Britain's GDP for May, surpassing the forecasted 0.2% increase. This uptick in economic activity led futures markets to adjust the probability of a quarter-point rate cut to 40%, down from 50% earlier in the week.

Sterling breached the $1.30 mark for the first time since July of the previous year on Wednesday and has risen by 2.1% so far in 2024, making it one of the best-performing major currencies.
