Sandeep Kumar remembers the harrowing incident vividly. The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed here on Thursday, filling the coach with dust and darkness.

'I recall a boy's loud cries before darkness enveloped us,' Kumar said. 'I was pulled out through a window by fellow passengers.'

Eight coaches derailed in Motiganj, 150 km from Lucknow, resulting in four deaths and about 20 injuries. The train, heading to Dibrugarh, had just crossed Gonda station.

Manish Tiwari, 35, in the B2 coach, described the moment of derailment as a strong jerk that hurled him to the roof.

Dileep Singh, travelling to Chhapra, mistook the impact for a dream. Many passengers escaped via emergency windows amid children's cries.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, cordoning off the area and aiding the injured. Ambulances and buses were arranged for transport and medical assistance. Passengers, shocked and injured, waited on the tracks for rescue.
