An Air India plane with food and essentials is en route to pick up passengers stranded in Russia after the previous day's emergency landing of a San Francisco-bound flight, the airline announced Friday.

The Delhi-to-West Coast flight made an unplanned landing in Russia following a potential issue in the cargo hold, marking the second such incident on this route in over a year. Air India confirmed that a crew and security team are aboard the rescue flight, and a dedicated hotline has been established for those with concerns.

Unlike several U.S. and European airlines avoiding Russian airspace amid the Ukraine war, Air India uses this route, offering time and cost benefits. The Indian embassy in Russia noted that a team of senior officials and an interpreter have arrived at Krasnoyarsk airport to assist the passengers.

The Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying 225 passengers and 19 crew members, safely landed in Siberia's Krasnoyarsk International Airport. Discontent arose as passengers were held in the international departure area, with some sleeping on the floor and struggling for food and water, as per social media reports.

Mayank Gupta, whose mother was on the flight, expressed frustration on social media that essential items remained on the aircraft. The emergency landing followed an activated smoke detector, although Russia's civil aviation agency stated there were no signs of fire or smoke after landing.

Boeing and U.S. State Department spokespeople deferred to Air India for comments. Russia's airspace bans, in response to Western sanctions, have disrupted global air routes, forcing airlines to adapt. In June 2023, a similar incident saw an Air India plane stranded for a day, highlighting ongoing challenges.
