The abolition of the angel tax has breathed new life into India's startup ecosystem, bringing much-needed relief amid a persistent funding winter. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's proposal to eliminate the angel tax for all investor classes aims to boost the entrepreneurial spirit and support innovation.
This long-sought industry proposal promises to direct more investments toward startups, which are vital engines of economic growth, employment generation, and innovation. The angel tax, introduced in 2012 to counteract money laundering and fraudulent startups, taxed the difference between the funding received by unlisted companies and their fair market value.
Startup leaders lauded the move. Vinay Agrrawal, Founder and CEO of Hubler, stated, "Abolishing the angel tax in the latest Union Budget will fuel innovation and growth in the Indian startup ecosystem." Soumyadip Roychoudhury of MSKB & Associates LLP added that this change would eliminate uncertainty and attract more investments, essential for expansion.
The policy shift is seen as a game-changer by many in the ecosystem. Nasir Ali, CEO of Gallant Sports, mentioned, "This will ease financial pressures on early-stage ventures and boost startup investments by 40% over the next few years." Manvinder Singh, Partner at JSA Advocates and Solicitors, highlighted that the angel tax was deemed unfair as it burdened startups with complex regulations and additional tax, deterring investments.
The government's decision is expected to enhance India's competitiveness in attracting both domestic and international investments, thereby propelling economic advancement and revitalizing the entrepreneurial landscape across the country.
