DIMTS Orders Surprise Alcohol Checks on Bus Drivers After Tragic Accident

Following a fatal accident near Shivaji Park metro station in Delhi, where a woman was killed and 34 others injured, the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) has mandated surprise alcohol checks on bus drivers. The agency manages cluster bus services and aims to prevent future incidents through strict safety measures.

In the wake of a tragic accident near the Shivaji Park metro station that resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to 34 people, the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) has taken decisive action. On Wednesday, an official announced that the agency has instructed its operators to conduct surprise alcohol checks on bus drivers.

The accident, which occurred on Monday morning, involved a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus crashing into a pillar, raising concerns about driver attentiveness. In response, DIMTS organized a session on Tuesday for 17 bus operators, focusing on driver sensitization and the implementation of safety checks.

Recognizing a pattern of cluster bus accidents, DIMTS has directed bus operators to enforce strict measures. These include mandatory random alcohol tests for drivers, counseling sessions before duty hours, and ensuring adequate rest for drivers. Recent data highlighted 107 cluster bus-involved accidents in 2022, prompting immediate action to avert further tragedies.
