Telecom giant Reliance Jio has bolstered connectivity in the landslide-ravaged areas of Wayanad by installing a second dedicated tower. The move, prompted by a request from the State Disaster Management Authority, aims to expand network capacity and coverage to assist distressed residents, rescue workers, and disaster management teams.
This enhancement in network capacity is crucial for on-ground coordination, including efforts by rescue workers, disaster management teams, and the control rooms and relief camps. The initiative comes at a critical time as the Indian Army intensifies its rescue operations. Troops from the Army's Madras Sappers have constructed a 100ft improvised footbridge at Choorlamalai, facilitating the evacuation of stranded people.
Major General VT Mathew, commanding the Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, emphasized the importance of the footbridge in bringing heavy equipment to the rescue sites. With over 500 Army personnel engaged in the operation, the bridge is expected to significantly improve the search and rescue efforts. Mathew confirmed the recovery of more than 100 bodies as multiple landslides struck Wayanad. Overall, 167 deaths have been reported.
According to Kerala Revenue Department, the landslides in Mundakkai and Churalmala on July 30 resulted in extensive destruction and loss of lives. Kerala Health Minister Veena George stated that 154 recovered bodies have been handed over to the district administration for identification. The Prime Minister's Office has announced compensation for the victims' families and the injured, reflecting the severity of the disaster.
