The government's detailed project report (DPR) for the planned Rs 41,000-crore international transhipment port at Great Nicobar Island is set for final approval, an official revealed on Sunday.
Following green lights from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the project, which has been scrutinized for environmental concerns, is poised for commencement in a few months, according to T K Ramachandran, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Secretary.
Anticipated to attract significant government and PPP investments, with major firms like Larsen and Toubro, Afcons Infrastructure, and JSW Infrastructure showing interest, the Great Nicobar Transhipment port project will bolster container handling capacity in phases, complementing nearby shipping hubs like Singapore and Colombo.
