Ukraine has secured a significant financial lifeline, receiving a $3.9 billion grant from the United States via the World Bank, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed on Monday.

This grant marks the first tranche of a $7.8 billion direct budgetary assistance package for 2024 from the U.S., aimed at supporting the financial stability of Ukraine during this challenging period, Shmyhal noted on the Telegram messaging app.

The Ukrainian finance ministry revealed that these funds are earmarked for essential social and humanitarian expenses, including salaries for teachers, State Emergency Service staff, and other public employees, as well as aid for displaced individuals, low-income families, and people with disabilities. Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko stated that the grant will allow Ukraine to meet these critical needs without increasing its debt burden. He added that since February 2022, the U.S. has provided nearly $27 billion in direct budget support, making it the largest source of financial aid for Ukraine. This grant is part of a broader $60 billion support package for Ukraine.
