ARIPO and AfrIPI Launch Intellectual Property Journalists Award Competition

This award competition seeks to highlight the vital role of journalists in educating the public about IP rights and the significant benefits of IP protection.

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO), in partnership with the Intellectual Property Rights & Innovation (AfrIPI) Project, is excited to announce the launch of the inaugural ARIPO Intellectual Property Journalists Award competition for 2024. This pioneering initiative aims to celebrate and reward exceptional journalism that enhances public awareness and understanding of intellectual property (IP) rights across ARIPO's 22 Member States.

This award competition seeks to highlight the vital role of journalists in educating the public about IP rights and the significant benefits of IP protection. By recognizing outstanding journalistic work, ARIPO and AfrIPI hope to encourage high-quality reporting that fosters positive attitudes towards IP and addresses emerging issues related to IP rights in Africa.

Journalists from ARIPO Member States are invited to submit their entries, which can include print, radio, television, and digital media coverage of IP-related topics. Submissions should be made through a dedicated online portal: https://apo-opa.co/3SBddR0. A panel of distinguished experts will evaluate the entries based on their ability to simplify complex IP issues for public understanding, explore the role of IP in everyday life, and connect IP with current social and business trends.

Entries should demonstrate a clear understanding of various IP concepts and present them in an accessible manner for the general public. Judges will look for submissions that effectively break down intricate IP topics into understandable segments, making IP relevant and relatable. Additionally, the competition encourages entries that highlight how IP impacts individuals and communities, showcasing real-life applications and benefits.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are crucial for fostering development in Africa. They protect inventions, innovations, and creative works while driving economic growth. Despite challenges in IP enforcement, IPR supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union's Agenda 2063.

ARIPO is an inter-governmental organization dedicated to fostering cooperation among Member States on IP matters, aiming to promote creativity and innovation for socio-economic growth through an effective IP system. AfrIPI, a pan-African project, supports the European Union in managing, utilizing, protecting, and enforcing IP rights across Africa, aligning with best practices and supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area and Agenda 2063.
