GeM Portal's Procurement Hits Rs 9.82 Lakh Crore Milestone

As of July 30, public procurement from India's Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal reached Rs 9.82 lakh crore. Launched on August 9, 2016, for central government purchases, GeM has grown significantly, now hosting over 63,000 government buyers and 62 lakh sellers. It supports a broad range of goods and services.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal has surpassed Rs 9.82 lakh crore in public procurement as of July 30, Parliament was informed on Friday.

Launched on August 9, 2016, GeM facilitates online purchases of goods and services for all central government ministries and departments. The portal achieved a procurement milestone of Rs 422 crore in its inaugural year, 2016-17, according to a written reply by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada in Rajya Sabha.

GeM has continued to grow, crossing Rs 4 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year. As of July 2024, the cumulative gross merchandise value for goods and services on GeM exceeded Rs 9.82 lakh crore.

The platform boasts over 63,000 government buyer organizations and more than 62 lakh sellers. It features a wide range of products, from office stationery to automobiles, and services, including transportation and waste management. Notably, more than 1.63 lakh women-led micro and small enterprises (MSEs) and 25,000 startups are registered on GeM. While South Korea's KONEPS remains the largest such platform globally, GeM ranks second.
